In our lab, we study student achievement motivation and engagement. The core of our research centers around providing novel information about the development of achievement motivation and engagement and what can impact this development. We are particularly interested in three main areas of student achievement motivation and engagement:

How do students’ beliefs relate to their achievement motivation and subsequent engagement?
How do important socializers such as teachers, parents, peers, and role models impact students’ motivation and engagement?
What is the role that context plays in creating supportive learning environments?

In our work, we use quantitative and qualitative methods alongside various theoretical frameworks, such as situated expectancy-value theory, social cognitive theory, and mindset theory, to guide our understanding of student motivation.  We examine student motivation and engagement across a wide range of learners, from PreK to college. Most of our research focuses on understanding student motivation and engagement within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) domains.
